When the roof shingles do not extend past the metal drip edge the water will suck back on the metal drip edge this is called capillary action and run behind your gutters.

The gutter should be mounted on the face of the fascia so that its run which must be sloped towards the downspout lies below the drip edge flashing at all times.
So the rainwater flows into the gutter and out of it through downspouts attached along the wall and away from the house.
While on the other hand a drip edge is installed to the trim and usually hangs directly behind the back of the gutter.
