Would it be possible to get some sort of large piece of cardboard or poster board and simply slip in under a table or bed.

Puzzle mats that roll up tend to be more popular simply because they are compact and highly portable.
It can be laid out on the floor or dining room table then when you re done working on it for the day it can be rolled up and put away for later.
The only thing was that a big jigsaw got slightly pushed in on itself as it rolled but it wasn t hard to straighten it all out when you unrolled it.
And of course a flat mat is portable as well but you often can t carry these vertically.
You would not want to leave too many loose pieces around the edges in this case though.
I had one years ago and it worked well.

On the other hand roll up models require more time and effort when you re putting your puzzle away whereas a flat mat usually zips closed in a flash.
So you can work the puzzle without a table i like doing them on the bed.
